After an up and down year in '82-83 Coach Sonny Smith's Auburn Tigers entered the 1983-84 season confident they could compete for an SEC championship. Part of that confidence stemmed from having two of the conference's best players.
Chuck Person averaged over 19 points per game during the '84 season and was named to the All SEC First Team. His teammate, Charles Barkley, was named SEC Player of the Year.
With Chuck and Charles leading the way Auburn finished the regular season 17-9 with wins over #2 Kentucky and #10 LSU. After squeaking past Vanderbilt and Tennessee, Auburn would face Kentucky again for the SEC Tournament Championship.
Even in a heartbreaking loss, 51-49, the Tigers earned the #5 seed in the East Region of the NCAA Tournament. It was a short lived stay as Auburn fell to #12 Richmond, 72-71.
